DONE DEAL: Red Wings sign big, tough high rated profile to huge contract

The Detroit Red Wings continue their trend of signing Michigan-born players by bringing in Austin Watson, a veteran of 10 NHL seasons, on a professional tryout contract, as announced by his agency.

Watson, a 32-year-old native of Ann Arbor, will compete for a spot on the roster during training camp and the preseason, hoping to secure a contract.

Known as a big, physical forward (standing 6-4, 238 pounds), Watson could add toughness to the lineup with his fighting ability. Last season, he played 33 games for the Tampa Bay Lightning, recording two goals, two assists, and accumulating 93 penalty minutes.

The Red Wings’ bottom six forwards appear solid with centers Andrew Copp and Tyler Motte, and wingers Michael Rasmussen, Jonatan Berggren, Christian Fischer, and Joe Veleno. However, they might need a 13th forward. Prospect Carter Mazur will also be vying for a spot but will only stay on the roster if he secures regular playing time; otherwise, he’ll continue developing in Grand Rapids.

Watson, drafted 18th overall by the Nashville Predators in 2010, has played 515 career games, totaling 60 goals, 58 assists, and 705 penalty minutes.
