The Indiana Fever have been on a roll in the second half of the 2024 season, winning four consecutive games under the leadership of standout rookie guard Caitlin Clark. Clark’s stellar performances have earned her widespread admiration, though some believe WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes hasn’t fully acknowledged her contributions. In response to critics, Swoopes recently shared text messages between herself and Clark from early 2024.
Swoopes posted on X (formerly Twitter), revealing an exchange where she apologized to Clark for mistakenly stating that it was her fifth year at Iowa when it was actually her fourth:
“Hey Caitlin, I wanted to personally reach out to you and say I made a mistake on what year this is for you. Covid year has me all confused… Lol! I also have nothing but respect for you and your game and appreciate your skill. Congrats on everything you have accomplished thus far. Be blessed,” Swoopes initially texted Clark.
Clark, unfazed by the error, reassured Swoopes that there were no hard feelings:
“No worries at all I really appreciate you reaching and there’s no hard feelings. I appreciate all you have done for women’s ball and for inspiring girls like me and building the foundation and platform we have today!” Clark responded.
Caitlin Clark has the Fever ready for deep run
Sheryl Swoopes has a deep appreciation for competitive and entertaining basketball, and the Fever are delivering just that.
With a 17-16 record, Indiana currently holds the sixth spot in the WNBA standings. If they maintain this level of play, a playoff berth and a potential deep run are within reach. Caitlin Clark has been on fire since the Olympic break, putting up 31 points and 12 assists in a 100-81 win over the Chicago Sky on August 20. She followed that with 28 points and 12 assists in a 100-93 victory against the Dallas Wings on September 1. For the season, Clark is averaging 18.8 points, 8.4 assists, and 1.4 steals.
Clark isn’t carrying the load alone. Kelsey Mitchell has emerged as a key offensive force post-Olympic break, exploding for 36 points against Dallas, double her season average.
If the Fever can keep this momentum, they have a real shot at making some noise in the playoffs.
