After much speculation, it’s now confirmed: Max Pacioretty will be joining the Toronto Maple Leafs’ training camp on a professional tryout (PTO). The 35-year-old left-winger has recorded six 30-goal seasons and previously served as the captain of the Montreal Canadiens from 2015 to 2018.

The Path for Pacioretty & What He Provides
The Maple Leafs’ decision to take a chance on Max Pacioretty is straightforward. Despite having some promising young talent, their left-wing depth is somewhat lacking for a contending team. Players like Matthew Knies, Easton Cowan, Nicholas Robertson, Bobby McMann, Pontus Holmberg, and Connor Dewar are all in the mix for an opening-night spot, but collectively, they’ve only tallied 166 career NHL points. While stars like Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, and William Nylander could help turn that inexperience into potential, there’s still some uncertainty.
Enter Pacioretty. Known for his leadership and past goal-scoring prowess, he brings valuable experience. Although his last season with the Washington Capitals showed some weaknesses—particularly at even strength—he remained a useful asset on the power play. In 47 games, he recorded four goals and 19 assists for 23 points and had the second-worst plus/minus rating of his career at minus-14.
Though most of the game is played at even strength, Toronto’s dominance in that area could offset Pacioretty’s struggles. His leadership and experience might outweigh his even-strength issues, and while it’s unlikely he returns to his 30-goal form, this signing isn’t without potential upside.
Ultimately, exploring options like this is always a smart move. If the Leafs feel Pacioretty can contribute, his PTO could lead to a full-time role, potentially helping their younger players take the next step.
