ICYM: Detroit Tigers Break 10-Year Drought and set record in major league baseball

The Detroit Tigers’ 4-2 defeat against the Colorado Rockies on Thursday was disappointing, but it followed a strong 28-game stretch that could carry momentum through the rest of this season and into 2025.

Since August 11, Detroit has gone 20-8, the best record in Major League Baseball during that period, according to Tigers PR. This is their strongest 28-game run since achieving the same 20-8 record from April 19 to May 20, 2014. Their pitching staff has been stellar, leading the Majors with a 2.46 ERA, while the offense has averaged 5.0 runs per game—ranking first in the American League and fifth overall.

How did Detroit get to this point?

It all started on August 11, when the Tigers secured a 5-4 win over the San Francisco Giants to close out a road trip. After a day off, they returned home and swept the Seattle Mariners in a three-game series, followed by taking two out of three from the New York Yankees.

After another day off, the Tigers visited Chicago. They dropped two of three games against the Cubs but bounced back by sweeping a four-game series with the White Sox. Back home, they won two of three against both the Los Angeles Angels and the Boston Red Sox.

Detroit hit a minor slump against the San Diego Padres, losing two of three on a West Coast trip on September 2. However, they rebounded by winning two of three from the Oakland Athletics. The Tigers then claimed two straight victories over the Rockies on Tuesday and Wednesday, capping their 20-8 run before Thursday’s loss.

Now three games over .500 heading into the weekend, the Tigers have entrusted their future to a core group of young players.

On the pitching side, rising talents like Ty Madden, Casey Mize, Keider Montero, and Brant Hurter are showing promise, while ace Tarik Skubal, a potential Cy Young candidate and the team’s Roberto Clemente Award nominee, anchors the rotation.

In the field, the Tigers are showcasing catcher Dylan Dingler, infielders Jace Jung, Colt Keith, and Spencer Torkelson, as well as outfielders Riley Greene and Parker Meadows.

They open a three-game series at Comerica Park on Friday against the Baltimore Orioles.
