Nearly three weeks ago, Miami came into the Swamp and dominated the Gators, and just this past weekend, Texas A&M, with their backup quarterback, did the same.
Florida doesn’t have much to feel optimistic about at the moment, but their freshman quarterback, DJ Lagway, has consistently impressed whenever he’s on the field.
Head coach Billy Napier is likely to lose his job at the end of the season, meaning the Gators will be in search of a new coach. Former head coach Urban Meyer has already ruled out any chance of returning to Florida.
The Gators have some standout playmakers, but unfortunately, their top offensive weapon will be sidelined this week.
Multiple reports confirm that wide receiver Eugene Wilson will miss the game against Mississippi State, a big blow to an offense still trying to find its rhythm. Despite missing last week’s game against Texas A&M, Wilson remains the team leader in targets and receptions this season.
Nick de la Torre from On3.com shared Napier’s full statement on losing Wilson this weekend. Napier said:
“We’re definitely a better team with Tre Wilson, no doubt about it. But I do think Dike and Badger really stepped up in a major way. We can adjust formations to get the primary guys in key spots, like we’ve done before. We’ll work with what we’ve got each week and design plays to highlight those guys. The tight end group and the backs have been great, too. We’ve got to keep finding ways to get the ball to our best players. Last week was a big one for Dike and Badger. Who’s going to be the third option? That’s the question. I think those guys will get a shot this week.”
With the Gators losing their top playmaker, they’re in desperate need of a spark, especially as they face a tough schedule ahead, including matchups against Georgia, Tennessee, Texas, LSU, and Ole Miss. They need all the firepower they can get.
