A former 5-star recruit and current wide receiver for Alabama, Ryan Williams, recently shared the moment that kept him from flipping his commitment to Auburn. Alabama and Auburn often compete for top high school recruits, especially in-state talents like Williams, a 17-year-old freshman from Saraland, Alabama. Initially part of the 2023 class, Williams reclassified to 2024 and is now playing for the Crimson Tide.
During his recruitment, Williams took an unofficial visit to Auburn for the Iron Bowl, where Alabama was set to face the Tigers. On the “New Wave Podcast,” Williams revealed that Auburn’s coaches gave him an ultimatum to commit to the Tigers if they won the game. They told him, “when we win, you gonna commit at center field, and we rushing the field.”
The game became an instant classic. With Auburn leading 24-20 and only 43 seconds left, Alabama faced 4th and goal from the 31-yard line. Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe then threw a game-winning touchdown pass to Isaiah Bond, sealing the victory. Williams recalled his nerves in that moment, saying, “Man, it’s 4th and 31, and when I say I was shaking in my boots… I’m like, man, come on, please.”
Although Williams was visiting Auburn, he admitted he wasn’t eager to storm the field. Once the pass was completed, he was relieved he didn’t have to commit to Auburn that day.

Before ultimately committing to Alabama, Ryan Williams visited Auburn five times, compared to just one visit to Alabama. Now, as a freshman for the Crimson Tide, Williams has made an impressive start, recording 10 receptions for 285 yards and four touchdowns in just three games.
No. 4 Alabama is set to host No. 2 Georgia on Saturday, September 28, following their Week 4 bye. The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff on ESPN.
