The Detroit Red Wings have revealed that they have extended Moritz Seider’s contract for seven years at a total of $59.85 million. This deal averages $8,550,000 per year and will run until the end of the 2030-31 season, at which point he will be an unrestricted free agent.

The 23-year-old Moritz Seider recorded nine goals and 33 assists for 42 points in 82 games last season, finishing second among Red Wings defensemen, just behind Shayne Gostisbehere.
Entering his fourth season with Detroit, Seider was selected sixth overall in the 2019 NHL Draft. He made his NHL debut in the 2021-22 season, scoring seven goals and 43 assists for a total of 50 points in 82 games, earning him the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s Top Rookie. Seider made history as the first German-born player to win the Calder and the first Red Wing to do so since Roger Crozier in 1964-65.
Over his three seasons in Detroit, the Zell, Germany native has accumulated 21 goals and 113 assists for 134 points in 246 games.
Before joining the NHL, Seider played in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) for Rögle BK, where he achieved 28 points in 41 games and was named SHL Defenseman of the Year. He also played in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) with Adler Mannheim, where he won the DEL Championship and was named Rookie of the Year.
With Seider’s new contract finalized, it’s noteworthy that captain Dylan Larkin’s average annual value will remain the highest on the team at $8.7 million.
The Red Wings are set to open their 2024-25 season against the Pittsburgh Penguins on October 10.
