Jeremy Swayman is holding his ground in contract talks with the Boston Bruins, as the team begins to look at other options. The Athletic’s Fluto Shinzawa reports that the 24-year-old goalie, still reeling from a tough arbitration process, isn’t willing to settle for a contract he feels is unfair. This is Swayman’s time to stand firm.
Shinzawa notes, “That is his right,” while also pointing out, “It is also the Bruins’ right to explore alternatives.”

The Bruins are preparing for the possibility of a Swayman holdout, signing veteran goalie Kasimir Kaskisuo to a professional tryout agreement (PTO) on Thursday. He joins a depth group that includes Brandon Bussi and Ryan Bischel, signaling that the team is actively considering alternatives if a deal with Swayman isn’t reached soon.
Additionally, the Bruins have called on Joonas Korpisalo to step up during Swayman’s absence in training camp. Korpisalo, an experienced NHL starter, has been working with goaltending coach Bob Essensa to regain his form. Despite the uncertainty surrounding Swayman, Korpisalo remains focused on his role, stating, “It doesn’t change my job. I’m just focusing on myself.”
Swayman Has Drawn a Line in the Sand With the Bruins
Swayman, known for his competitive nature, is taking a significant risk by potentially sitting out. This is typical of his personality; as noted by Shinzawa, there have been moments in his career where he responded to challenges with determination. When Swayman believes in something, he’s driven to prove doubters wrong and himself right.
This isn’t ideal for the Bruins unless they can secure a deal with him.
Every missed practice, preseason game, or regular-season match could hinder his readiness when he does return. If he hasn’t signed by December 1, he will be ineligible to play for the 2024-25 season—a worst-case scenario that raises questions about how far Swayman is willing to go.
Both sides may need to find common ground, but for now, the Bruins are preparing for the likelihood that Swayman may not be back soon. They are making alternative plans, and discussions about trades are beginning to arise if the situation escalates.
