Kenley Jansen is 56-for-64 in save chances over his two seasons with the Red Sox.
Kenley Jansen might have made his final appearance for Boston, closing out the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader sweep against the Twins with a scoreless ninth inning. The 36-year-old closer struck out Minnesota’s Jose Miranda with a 96 mph cutter to end the game.
However, later that night, Red Sox manager Alex Cora mentioned that Jansen would likely be placed on the injured list due to a sore shoulder.
“There’s a strong possibility Kenley goes on the IL,” Cora said, according to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo. “He’s been dealing with this shoulder issue, and recovery hasn’t been happening. He pitched today as planned, but in Game 2, we had Chris Martin and Justin Slaten ready to close. People saw 96 mph, but they missed the 89 mph first pitch. Chances are, he’ll go on the IL tomorrow, and we’ll adjust.”
Jansen’s two-year, $32 million contract is set to expire after the season, leaving his future with the team uncertain. If Sunday’s outing was indeed his last in a Red Sox uniform, Jansen will finish with 56 saves in 64 chances, posting a 3.44 ERA across 99.1 innings.
