Javonte Williams is no longer performing at a high level for the Denver Broncos, and it’s time for the team to consider a major overhaul of their running back group. Williams hasn’t averaged four yards per carry in a game for nearly a year. This season, he’s managed just 52 yards on 24 attempts, giving him a meager 2.2 yards per carry. His costly fumble during a crucial drive, which led to a Buccaneers touchdown, could have easily been the game’s turning point had Denver lost.
Backup Tyler Badie, on the other hand, made the most of his limited opportunities, rushing for 70 yards on nine carries. His explosive potential every time he touches the ball is hard to ignore, making him a strong candidate for increased playing time.
Unfortunately, rookie running back Audric Estime is on injured reserve, making it difficult to completely phase Williams out of the rotation. But it’s a change the Broncos need. Drafted in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft after the team traded up for him, Williams had a promising rookie season. However, the 2022 knee injury seems to have had lingering effects, hampering his performance. With Williams set to hit free agency after the 2024 season and Estime waiting in the wings, there’s little reason to believe Williams will be part of the Broncos’ future plans.
Williams has struggled for over a year now, while both Badie and Jaleel McLaughlin show more explosiveness. It’s possible even Estime could outperform Williams once healthy. In hindsight, drafting Williams may have been one of the worst decisions of George Paton’s tenure. His current output of less than four yards per carry—and closer to two yards—simply isn’t sustainable for Denver. The Broncos need to move on from Williams as part of their running back solution.
