JUST IN: Rangers blockbuster mock trade elite defender just now

The New York Rangers are currently in their Stanley Cup window and should concentrate on constructing a championship-caliber team. As the offseason wraps up, it’s unlikely that any major trades will happen before the deadline—although anything can happen. One fan, highlighted on Heavy, has suggested a mock trade that could bolster the Rangers’ roster just in time for the season.

Rangers send three NHL regulars and two draft picks to Minnesota in blockbuster mock trade

In this proposed trade, the Rangers would send Kaapo Kakko, Ryan Lindgren, and Jonny Brodzinski to the Minnesota Wild, along with two draft picks: a first-round pick and a fifth-round pick in 2025, both of which originally belonged to Minnesota.

Regardless of whether this trade occurs, Kakko’s tenure in New York is likely nearing its conclusion. He has faced challenges throughout his career, and the Rangers may want to explore better alternatives for their third line.

Lindgren would be harder to part with, but due to his history of injuries, the Rangers might be seeking a more reliable long-term option. The 26-year-old defenseman has been a valuable player on New York’s top unit, but keeping him for the long haul poses risks.

Rangers would acquire Jonas Brodin and Mats Zuccarello from Minnesota

In return for the proposed package sent to the Wild, the Rangers would bring back Mats Zuccarello and acquire elite defender Jonas Brodin, along with a second-round draft pick in 2025.

Zuccarello, now 37, spent the early part of his career with the Rangers, becoming a fan favorite before his departure left many disappointed. Despite his age, he remains highly effective, having recorded 63 points in 69 games last season with Minnesota. His addition would significantly strengthen the Rangers’ third line by taking Kakko’s place.

The key highlight of this major trade would be acquiring Brodin. A former 10th overall pick in 2011, Brodin has established himself as one of the top defensemen in the NHL at 31 years old. While he isn’t a high point scorer, he excels as a shutdown defenseman and is strong in his own zone. His skill set is similar to Lindgren’s, but with greater effectiveness. Swapping Lindgren for Brodin would be a substantial improvement for the Rangers’ defensive lineup.
