DONE DEAL JUST NOW: Packers commits Rookie TE to booster squad

In Week 1, the Carolina Panthers signed tight end Messiah Swinson from the Green Bay Packers’ practice squad to their 53-man roster. After three weeks without playing a snap, the Panthers decided to waive him on Tuesday.

With Swinson gone, the Packers added tight end Johnny Lumpkin to their practice squad to fill the gap. However, Lumpkin was released shortly after it was announced that Swinson had been waived by the Panthers.

It became clear that the Packers intended to bring Swinson back to their practice squad, provided he cleared waivers on Wednesday. He did, and he returned to Green Bay for Thursday’s practice.

Swinson, a 6’7″, 259-pound blocking tight end, must have impressed the Packers during the offseason, as they have kept a spot for him on their 70-man roster. While Green Bay currently seems satisfied with their tight end trio of Tucker Kraft, Luke Musgrave, and Ben Sims, they may still hope to develop Swinson over the next few years.
