The Houston Astros may target a high-profile free agent first baseman this offseason. With their current roster, first base appears to be their most pressing need. While the team faces key decisions, including the contract status of Alex Bregman, they might be prepared to spend more aggressively to keep their championship window open.
Pete Alonso, a potential free agent, has been linked to Houston multiple times over the past year. Jon Heyman of the New York Post recently mentioned that Alonso, a power hitter, could be a fit for the Astros, noting his connection to Kyle Tucker, Alonso’s former high school teammate. Other teams, such as the Cubs and Mariners, might also be in the mix for Alonso.
Alonso’s contract demands could be steep, given his home run power. Spotrac projected a seven-year, $242 million deal for him, although that figure seems high. However, if the Astros are willing to pay top dollar to fill their first base void, a contract around $200 million could be feasible.
Alonso’s addition would instantly boost the Astros’ lineup, potentially making them the best in the American League. While his current season may not match his previous highs, with 34 home runs and a 126 OPS+, his career stats of 226 home runs and a 134 OPS+ over six seasons make him a prime target.
