The Boston Red Sox can now shift their attention to preparing for the 2025 MLB season.
On Sunday, they wrapped up their season against the Tampa Bay Rays, having missed the playoffs but showing some positive steps forward. Now, the team must revisit its strategy to move forward. The offseason will bring roster changes, with new players joining and others departing.
Boston aims to harness its young talent and make a playoff push next year. Several players are pending free agents, including closer Kenley Jansen, who is expected to leave, while others might return.
Reliever Chris Martin, for instance, is reportedly open to re-signing for 2025, according to Alex Speier of The Boston Globe. Speier noted, “Chris Martin is now in for the 8th, in what could be his last game with the Red Sox. He said he’s open to returning – a willingness driven by his view that the Sox can be in the thick of the race next year.”
Martin, one of Boston’s most reliable relievers, has posted a 2.19 ERA over 99 appearances in the past two seasons after signing a two-year, $13.5 million contract before 2023. While he’s approaching the end of his career, he is projected to command a deal of just over $1 million, making his potential return a smart move for the team.
