DONE DEAL: San Francisco Giants sign another key man to league deal

The San Francisco Giants have appointed former All-Star catcher Buster Posey as their new president of baseball operations, replacing Farhan Zaidi. This announcement came from team chairman Greg Johnson after the Giants concluded the season with an 80-82 record under manager Bob Melvin, one win better than in 2023. The Giants have not made the playoffs since their NL West title in 2021.

Posey, 37, became part of the Giants’ ownership group in September 2022, less than a year after retiring in November 2021. Johnson expressed enthusiasm about Posey taking on a larger role, stating, “We believe Buster is the ideal person to define, direct, and lead this franchise’s baseball philosophy.” He also praised Posey’s leadership qualities and said he is confident Posey and Melvin will work together to bring success back to the Giants.

Posey, a seven-time All-Star with a career batting average of .302, was the 2012 NL MVP and was drafted fifth overall by the Giants in 2008. His former manager, Bruce Bochy, now leading the Texas Rangers, expressed confidence in Posey’s ability to succeed in his new role, noting his strong understanding of the game.

Posey and his wife, Kristen, moved back to Lafayette in the East Bay last year after residing in Georgia following his retirement. Posey retired after a 107-win season for the Giants in 2021 and had opted out of the shortened 2020 season due to the pandemic.

Zaidi, hired from the Los Angeles Dodgers in November 2018, saw his tenure end as Johnson acknowledged the need for change, citing unmet expectations during Zaidi’s six-year run.

The Giants, in compliance with MLB’s Selig Rule, are committed to ensuring diversity in their hiring for open positions. Johnson, Posey, and Melvin are scheduled to address the media at Oracle Park.
