Early in training camp, McCabe confirmed that he and the Leafs were in talks about a new deal, aligning with an earlier report from Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman that both sides had engaged in preliminary discussions.

Insider Reveals Reported Details of Jake McCabe's New Contract with Maple Leafs

During Wednesday’s episode of *Real Kyper & Bourne*, while discussing the Leafs’ defense, Nick Kypreos revealed that an extension for McCabe could happen as soon as this weekend. Kypreos mentioned, “I’ve heard the talks are going well… there’s still debate on the length, but I’m thinking he could earn $30M over six years starting next season.”

McCabe, 30, was acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks in February 2023 along with Sam Lafferty and conditional draft picks, with Chicago retaining $2M of his $4M salary. Since joining Toronto, McCabe has appeared in 94 games, notching 9 goals and 34 points while averaging over 20 minutes of ice time per game.

McCabe quickly became a fan favorite due to his physicality—he logged 219 hits last season—and solid defensive play. While a six-year deal for a 30-year-old might raise eyebrows, it’s expected to be more favorable than the six-year contract Chris Tanev received in free agency, considering McCabe’s age advantage.
