One pressing need is at first base. Here are three potential trades that could address critical areas and add fresh talent to the Astros’ lineup.
Given that the Astros have the worst farm system in baseball, they should focus on acquiring talent via trades. Since inter-division trades are rare, players from teams like the A’s, Rangers, Angels, and Mariners won’t be included, but there are still promising trade options for the Astros.
Targeting Yandy Díaz from the Rays
With Bregman’s anticipated departure leaving a gap at third base, Tampa Bay Rays’ Yandy Díaz would be a perfect fit. Díaz had a stellar 2024 season, hitting .281 with a .341 on-base percentage, highlighted by his excellent plate discipline and solid power numbers. His 2023 season was even more impressive, where he slashed .330/.410/.522, earning an All-Star selection, a Silver Slugger, and finishing 6th in AL MVP voting.
To acquire Díaz, the Astros could offer Rhett Kouba, a right-handed pitcher nearing MLB readiness in Triple-A, and Chase Jaworsky, a versatile infielder from Single-A with solid potential. This trade would benefit the Rays’ development model, while Díaz would be a reliable offensive and defensive presence for Houston.
Christian Encarnacion-Strand from the Reds
The Astros have struggled to fill the void at first base left by José Abreu. Christian Encarnacion-Strand of the Cincinnati Reds could be a great target despite a subpar 2024 season, where he slashed .190/.220/.293. His potential remains exciting, as his minor league stats show his raw power, boasting a .322/.386/.604 slash line with 56 home runs in 211 games between 2022-2023.
To get Encarnacion-Strand, the Astros might offer a package including Zach Cole, an outfielder in Double-A, Nick Hernandez, a reliable bullpen arm, and Forrest Whitley, a former top prospect looking for a fresh start. This trade would give the Reds a mix of immediate and long-term value while bolstering Houston’s lineup with another power bat.
Freddy Peralta from the Brewers
Justin Verlander’s potential retirement leaves a gap in Houston’s starting rotation. Freddy Peralta from the Milwaukee Brewers is an appealing option.
