LAKE FOREST, Ill. (CBS) — Montez Sweat is set to take on the Washington Commanders this Sunday, marking his first matchup against the team that drafted him before trading him to the Bears a year ago.
Since the trade, Sweat has thrived, securing a new contract and earning a Pro Bowl appearance, though he admitted the trade initially stung.
“Like any player, I was a little upset, but I get it’s a business and understand how it goes,” Sweat said. “I was offended, but I didn’t take it personally. I aim to make an impact every week, and maybe this week has a bit of extra motivation, but it’s just another game.”
As for the Commanders’ quarterback situation, the Bears remain uncertain who they’ll face on Sunday—either Marcus Mariota or Jayden Daniels, who is managing a rib injury.
Bears defensive coordinator Eric Washington noted he doesn’t expect any major shifts in the Commanders’ offensive scheme if Mariota plays.
“I don’t anticipate much change. Mariota’s experienced and knows how to run their offense,” Washington said. “Both quarterbacks are mobile and able to throw on the run, so while they have different styles, they’re both talented.”
In building chemistry, Sweat hosts weekly dinners with his fellow defensive linemen every Thursday night, where they watch football, review film, and strengthen their bond. As he puts it, “You play harder when you want to play for the guy next to you.”
