The Nationals decline an $8 million option on their All-Star opting instead for a $2.5 million buyout

The Washington Nationals declined their $8 million mutual option for Joey Gallo on Sunday, making the first baseman/outfielder a free agent.

As part of the agreement signed in January, Gallo will receive a $2.5 million buyout, which was included alongside his $2.5 million salary for this season.

Turning 31 on November 19, Gallo posted a .161 batting average this year with 10 home runs, 27 RBIs, and 102 strikeouts in 223 at-bats.

A two-time All-Star, Gallo holds a career average of .194, with 208 home runs, 453 RBIs, and 1,292 strikeouts across 2,869 at-bats in his 10-season major league career, playing for the Texas Rangers (2015-21), New York Yankees (2021-22), Los Angeles Dodgers (2022), Minnesota Twins (2023), and the Nationals.
