New York Yankees trade for intriguing high upside player to replace in blockbuster

A recent rumor has connected the New York Yankees to a possible American League option as a replacement for Gleyber Torres.

Yankees' AL East Rival Could Sign Gleyber Torres in Free Agency

The upcoming weeks will be crucial for the Yankees, who successfully kept ace Gerrit Cole, yet face the significant challenge of re-signing superstar outfielder Juan Soto. Soto, an All-Star and the standout of this year’s free agent class, is expected to draw considerable interest across the league.

Additionally, the Yankees need to address their infield lineup. Decisions must be made regarding who will start at first, second, and third base. Jazz Chisholm Jr., acquired at the trade deadline, could play either third or second, though he’s more likely to end up at third.

For first base, the team has shown interest in several players, including former NL MVP Paul Goldschmidt. Recently, however, a notable option emerged as a potential second base replacement for Torres.

New York Yankees reportedly a trade contender for Yoan Moncada

MLB reporter Francys Romero reported Wednesday that Yoan Moncada is drawing interest in free agency, with over five teams, including the Blue Jays, Yankees, and Mariners, monitoring his availability.

Back in 2018 and 2019, the Chicago White Sox infielder appeared on track to become a regular All-Star. However, injuries, notably a hip issue that restricted him to just 12 games in 2024, have prevented him from maintaining that peak performance.

Though Moncada’s career trajectory appears to be in decline, he’s only 29 and could become a valuable asset for the Yankees at second base if he manages to stay healthy. After several challenging seasons, he may be available at a more affordable price. In 2019, the Cuban native showcased his potential by hitting 25 home runs during an All-Star-caliber year.
