Among the options, free-agent outfielder Anthony Santander is emerging as a strong candidate. Santander, who had a breakout 2024 season with the Baltimore Orioles, is reportedly intrigued by the possibility of joining the Yankees, according to Erik Boland of Newsday.
Santander, 30, set career-highs last season with 44 home runs, 102 RBIs, and an .814 OPS (excluding the shortened 2020 season), earning him both an All-Star nod and a Silver Slugger award. Over eight seasons with the Orioles, Santander hit 155 home runs and posted a .776 OPS, solidifying his reputation as a reliable power bat. His switch-hitting ability would bring balance to the Yankees’ lineup, complementing sluggers Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton.
While Santander has primarily played right field, the Yankees might utilize him in left field, especially if Judge shifts back to his natural position in right. This alignment could also open center field for Jasson Dominguez, one of the Yankees’ top prospects, who showed promise in his brief MLB stint.
The Yankees are also reportedly pursuing Cody Bellinger, a versatile first baseman and outfielder who revived his career with the Chicago Cubs in 2024. However, as MLB insider Jon Heyman reports, financial disagreements remain a hurdle in trade talks between the Yankees and Cubs. New York has even considered including No. 5 prospect Will Warren, a right-handed pitcher, in a potential deal for Bellinger.
If Bellinger joins the Yankees, he could slot in at first base while still leaving room for Santander or another outfielder like Teoscar Hernández. If Bellinger’s deal doesn’t materialize, the urgency to sign Santander as a key outfield piece would likely escalate.
Santander would give the Yankees a significant upgrade in offensive depth and versatility, allowing them to balance their lineup more effectively. His career year in 2024 indicates he’s trending upward, making him a lower-risk signing compared to the uncertainties surrounding a Bellinger trade.
