The San Francisco Giants and Toronto Blue Jays are rapidly running out of top-tier options to strengthen their starting rotations. Early Sunday morning, it was announced that Corbin Burnes had secured a six-year contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks. With Burnes no longer available, these teams will need to turn their attention to other alternatives. Here are three of the best options still on the market:
Jack Flaherty emerged as the best free-agent pitcher remaining following Burnes’ signing. In 2024, he posted an impressive 3.17 ERA across 28 starts, splitting time between the Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Dodgers. After a disappointing 2023 season, Flaherty rebounded strongly, maintaining his trademark high strikeout rate while reducing walks. He is anticipated to sign a three-year deal worth $63 million.
While José Quintana is entering the twilight of his career, he continues to be a reliable and durable option. In 2024, he made 31 starts for the New York Mets, a feat he has accomplished several times in his career. Though his strikeout numbers have dipped, Quintana has adapted effectively, finding other ways to retire hitters. He’s expected to sign a two-year contract valued at $16 million.
Nick Pivetta returned to the Boston Red Sox rotation in 2024, delivering a 4.14 ERA across 26 starts. While he gave up some hard contact, his 4.8:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio was impressive. Though Pivetta isn’t an ace like Burnes, he would be a valuable addition as a No. 3 or No. 4 starter for the Giants or Blue Jays. He is projected to sign a four-year deal worth $60 million.
