1.) How do you feel about the Lions’ defense over the past month?
Christian Booher:
I think the defense has been inconsistent, which is understandable given the injuries the team has faced. Aaron Glenn has had to piece together the front seven, and while there have been struggles, the secondary has been relatively healthy (aside from Carlton Davis’ injury) and has helped stabilize the defense, especially when the pass rush faltered. Winning 12 of their last 13 games despite these challenges is a remarkable achievement.
Vito Chirco:
Other than the Bills game, I think the Lions’ defense has performed admirably despite the injury issues. This is a testament to defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn and his ability to adapt and scheme effectively against opposing offenses. Players like DJ Reader, Jack Campbell, Brian Branch, and Kerby Joseph have been instrumental in maintaining defensive productivity. Overall, Glenn’s unit has consistently given the Lions a chance to compete every week.
2.) Should Jahmyr Gibbs take on the bulk of carries next year over David Montgomery?
Booher:
The current balance between Gibbs and Montgomery works well for the team as long as both players are performing at a high level. Each player brings a unique skill set, with Montgomery thriving in grind-it-out situations and Gibbs delivering explosive plays. The Lions should continue to adapt based on who has the hot hand and the demands of specific game situations. Assuming both remain healthy and productive, maintaining this balance is the best approach.
Chirco:
I believe Gibbs should and likely will take on the majority of carries in 2025. That said, Montgomery is still a crucial part of the Lions’ backfield, and their one-two punch dynamic is key to maximizing Gibbs’ potential. While Montgomery will still play a significant role, the electrifying Gibbs is poised to emerge as the primary ball carrier next season.
3.) Who will shine against the 49ers on Monday Night Football?
Booher:
Under the bright lights, I expect Detroit’s stars to step up. While Jared Goff may not replicate his flawless performance from his last Monday Night Football appearance, I anticipate another strong showing. Amon-Ra St. Brown seems primed for a standout game, with over 100 yards and a touchdown catch. Additionally, Kerby Joseph could solidify his place as the league’s interception leader by picking off Brock Purdy late in the game.
Chirco:
Given how Dolphins RB Devon Achane torched the 49ers last week (190 all-purpose yards), I believe Gibbs is poised for a breakout performance. I also think Jameson Williams could excel against San Francisco’s frequent single-high safety looks, benefiting from Gibbs’ success on the ground to create opportunities for deep passes from Jared Goff. Together, Gibbs and Williams are likely to be Detroit’s key playmakers on Monday night.
