The Boston Red Sox have made a few moves to rebound from their disappointing 2024 season, but so far, they haven’t made any major acquisitions that could turn the tide. That could change if they manage to sign a star like Alex Bregman in free agency, though their chances of landing him appear to be dwindling. If the Red Sox ultimately miss out on Bregman, they’ll need to make a bold move to salvage their offseason.
Cody Williams of FanSided recently suggested that Boston could pursue a blockbuster trade for rival superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr. if they fail to secure Bregman. However, this hinges on the Toronto Blue Jays even considering the possibility of trading Guerrero, which remains uncertain.
“The Red Sox have long seemed like a logical landing spot for Guerrero, and I can’t help but think some of the slow-playing we’ve seen this offseason from (Craig) Breslow could be with an eye toward Vladdy next winter,” Williams wrote. “But they could jumpstart that process by offering someone like Marcelo Mayer and a package of other prospects. Even after the (Garrett) Crochet trade, Boston still has one of the strongest farm systems in baseball that could help the Blue Jays start fresh post-Vladdy and Bo Bichette.”
While it’s unlikely the Blue Jays would trade Guerrero, especially to a division rival, the Red Sox might have the resources to put together the best possible offer. A deal could potentially include players like Triston Casas, Wilyer Abreu, Marcelo Mayer, and other top prospects to entice Toronto.
The big question remains: Is a Guerrero trade even on the table? If it is, the Red Sox could position themselves as serious contenders for his services.
