Houston Astros star infielder Alex Bregman remains one of the premier players available in free agency. However, with few teams left in the market, his rumored $200 million asking price may be a significant hurdle. According to FanSided’s MLB insider Robert Murray, the Boston Red Sox are one of the teams heavily linked to Bregman. While Murray expresses skepticism about the likelihood of a deal, he acknowledges the potential fit.
“The Boston Red Sox have been connected to Bregman in reports, and they are indeed in search of a right-handed hitter,” Murray wrote. “As a third baseman, Bregman would be a logical addition for Boston. I’m doubtful he lands there, but if his asking price comes down, it could give Craig Breslow and the front office an opportunity to make a move. It’s also worth noting that Bregman has a connection with Red Sox manager Alex Cora, who was his bench coach during their time with the Astros.”
Adding Bregman would be a significant boost for Boston as they aim to compete in the competitive American League East, trying to close the gap with the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles. If the Red Sox sign him, they could utilize Bregman at third base while rotating Rafael Devers and Triston Casas between first base and designated hitter. While acquiring Bregman might make Casas expendable, it doesn’t necessarily mean Boston would need to trade him.
