The Philadelphia Phillies were one of baseball’s top teams throughout most of the 2024 season. However, their postseason collapse overshadowed their regular-season success. Entering the offseason, there were reports that the Phillies were considering shaking up their roster, including the possibility of trading All-Star infielder Alec Bohm. So far, though, they’ve avoided making any drastic moves, opting instead to trade for pitcher Jesús Luzardo. While they were linked to free agent Alex Bregman, FanSided’s MLB insider Robert Murray believes a deal is unlikely unless the Phillies free up payroll.
“There has been speculation connecting Bregman and the Phillies,” Murray wrote, “but it’s highly unlikely Philadelphia gets involved unless they successfully trade Nick Castellanos or another major salary.”
With the Phillies expected to keep Bohm and avoid shedding any significant contracts, a $200 million deal for Bregman seems improbable. Castellanos also appears likely to stay in Philadelphia, making it difficult for the team to pursue high-priced free agents. As a result, Bregman is more likely to land with a team that has greater financial flexibility. The Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, and Toronto Blue Jays all appear to be more logical destinations for him than the Phillies.
