Left-handed pitcher A.J. Minter has signed a two-year, $22 million contract with the New York Mets, finalized on Thursday. The deal includes an opt-out option after the 2025 World Series, allowing Minter to test free agency again.
The 31-year-old Minter has spent his entire eight-year MLB career with the Atlanta Braves. Over 384 relief appearances, he has a 24-29 record, a 3.28 ERA, and 36 saves. In 2023, Minter posted a strong 5-4 record with a 2.62 ERA and one save over 39 games before undergoing season-ending hip surgery in August to address multiple issues, including a torn labrum, hip impingement, and femoral lesion.
Reliable Track Record
Minter has consistently proven his value as a reliever, amassing 422 strikeouts over 348 2/3 innings. He peaked with 15 saves in 2018 and contributed 10 saves in 2023. A vital part of the Braves’ 2021 World Series-winning bullpen, Minter holds a 3-1 postseason record with a 2.88 ERA and 36 strikeouts over 25 playoff innings.
Mets Bolster Pitching Depth
The Mets, already active in upgrading their pitching staff, recently added Sean Manaea, Frankie Montas, Griffin Canning, and former All-Star closer Clay Holmes. With Minter in the mix, they’ve secured a dependable left-handed setup option for star closer Edwin Díaz.
Minter’s contract includes a $1 million signing bonus, a $10 million salary for 2024, and an $11 million player option for 2026. He can also earn performance bonuses, such as $100,000 for World Series MVP honors and additional incentives for accolades like All-Star selections and Cy Young consideration.
Mets Add Jesse Winker to the Lineup
In a related move, the Mets signed outfielder and designated hitter Jesse Winker to a one-year, $7.5 million deal. Winker’s contract includes a $1 million signing bonus, a $6.5 million salary, and performance-based bonuses that could add up to $1.5 million.
These strategic acquisitions suggest the Mets are reallocating resources, potentially signaling a reduced likelihood of re-signing franchise favorite Pete Alonso.
