BOLD MOVE: Red Sox sign elite free-agent infielder

After the spotlight on Juan Soto and Roki Sasaki dominated early December and January, Alex Bregman has emerged as the new center of attention in MLB. His market is heating up, with five teams reportedly making concrete offers, including the Boston Red Sox.

The Red Sox already have a formidable offensive third baseman in Rafael Devers, but they are open to shifting him to first base if they can secure Bregman, a two-time World Series champion.

However, a potential snag in negotiations is Bregman’s contract demands. The Red Sox are unwilling to offer more than a four-year deal, while at least three other teams have proposed five-year contracts. Boston Sports Gordo highlighted this on X, reporting:
“Update: The Red Sox have only shown interest in an Alex Bregman deal at four years or less, according to @alexspeier. It’s unlikely that Bregman would take such a deal, as he reportedly has five-year deals from at least three teams.”

The competition for Bregman’s signature is fierce, with the Houston Astros (his current team), Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers, and Red Sox all in the mix. At least two of these teams, likely including the Astros, are offering contracts of five years or longer.

Despite being on the older side, Bregman remains an elite player. While last season was slightly below his career standards, he still managed 26 home runs and a 118 wRC+. Considering his career 135 wRC+, expectations are understandably high.

Offensively and defensively, Bregman is a valuable asset. With 39.7 career fWAR already, he’s on track to surpass 50 by the end of his career. If the Red Sox can land him, he would undoubtedly be a transformative addition to their roster.
