Great News for Steelers: Omar Khan Hints at $80.1 Million Star Free Agent Signing After Release

The Pittsburgh Steelers may be on the verge of a major acquisition that could significantly bolster their offense. General Manager Omar Khan recently hinted at the possibility of signing star wide receiver Cooper Kupp, who was officially released by the Los Angeles Rams after the team failed to find a suitable trade partner. Kupp, who had two years remaining on his three-year, $80 million contract, now becomes one of the most attractive free agents on the market — and the Steelers appear to be in prime position to secure his services.

The Rams’ decision to part ways with Kupp came as a surprise to many around the league. Despite Kupp’s injury struggles over the last two seasons, his production when healthy has been nothing short of elite. Kupp was the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2021 after leading the league with 145 receptions, 1,947 receiving yards, and 16 touchdowns. His historic season also included a Super Bowl MVP performance, where he hauled in the game-winning touchdown pass from Matthew Stafford to secure the Rams’ victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI.

However, the Rams have been navigating difficult salary cap issues, and Kupp’s sizable contract became a financial burden. With the emergence of younger receivers like Puka Nacua and Tutu Atwell, the Rams ultimately decided to move on from Kupp in an effort to free up cap space and build toward the future. Attempts to trade Kupp reportedly drew interest from several teams, but no deal materialized, leading to his release.

That’s where the Steelers come in. Omar Khan has been aggressive in improving the Steelers’ roster since taking over as GM, and adding a player of Kupp’s caliber could transform Pittsburgh’s offense. In a recent press conference, Khan was asked about the possibility of pursuing Kupp, and while he didn’t confirm the Steelers’ intentions outright, his response suggested that Pittsburgh will be in the mix.

“We’re always looking to improve our team,” Khan said. “When a player of that caliber becomes available, you have to do your due diligence. We have a lot of respect for Cooper and what he’s accomplished in this league.”

The Steelers have long been searching for a reliable, elite-level receiver to complement their young offensive core.

Signing Kupp would also provide the Steelers with invaluable veteran leadership. At 31 years old, Kupp brings experience and a championship pedigree to a young Steelers offense. His professionalism and work ethic have been widely praised throughout the league, and his presence in the locker room could accelerate the development of Pittsburgh’s young offensive talent.

From a financial standpoint, Pittsburgh has enough cap flexibility to make a competitive offer for Kupp. While Kupp may need to take a pay cut from his previous contract, the opportunity to play for a historic franchise with a strong fanbase and a competitive roster could make the Steelers an attractive destination.

If the Steelers are able to land Kupp, it would send a clear message that Pittsburgh is serious about contending in the AFC. Adding Kupp would address a major area of need and give the Steelers a balanced, more dangerous attack heading into the 2025 season.

While nothing is official yet, the signs are pointing toward Pittsburgh making a strong push for Kupp. If Omar Khan can pull off the signing, it would be one of the most impactful moves of the NFL offseason and could elevate the Steelers back into serious playoff contention. Steelers fans have reason to be excited — Cooper Kupp in black and gold could be the missing piece that helps Pittsburgh get back to the top of the AFC.
