Sad News: Raiders $75 Million Star Threatens To Take Drastic Step if Raiders Don’t Extend Contract

When the Las Vegas Raiders traded for quarterback Geno Smith, it seemed like a contract extension would’ve been baked into the deal. However, he’s officially been a member of the team since March 13 and there’s been no new contract.

Smith is on an expiring contract and wants an extension. That’s a big reason why he moved on from the Seattle Seahawks. The Raiders may have a problem if they can’t come to an agreement.

According to Tashan Reed of The Athletic, Smith could strongly consider holding out and refusing to play for Las Vegas.

“Smith is in the final year of a three-year contract he signed with the Seattle Seahawks in 2023,” Reed wrote. “Although he was paid a $16 million roster bonus on March 16, none of his $14.8 million salary for 2025 is guaranteed. It’s unlikely that Smith would play without a new deal, according to league sources.”

This may be the reason why the Raiders haven’t held a press conference to introduce Smith as a member of the team. That said, the team is eager to get a deal done.

“We’re working on it,” head coach Pete Carroll said Monday at the annual league meeting in Florida. “G’s excited to get going and get started. He’ll be here when we get rolling, but we are working on it.”

It’s difficult to imagine a scenario where the Raiders would trade a third-round pick for Smith if they didn’t want to pay him. If this lingers into the draft, it would be very interesting to see if Las Vegas targets a quarterback early just in case the Smith situation doesn’t get resolved.
