Sad New: FSU Key Star entering transfer portal shocking Mike Norvell and Seminole fans

Florida State quarterback , who once seemed betrothed to the Seminoles for life, is leaving after one autumn.

The true freshman, who started the ‘Noles’ last two games during their disastrous 2024 season, told Hayes Fawcett of On3Sports he’s entering the NCAA transfer portal. Kromenhoek, who committed to FSU in March 2022 and signed last December, will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Meantime, Florida veteran edge rusher Jack Pyburn, who had 60 tackles, a sack and interception for the Gators during their resurgent 2024 season, also is entering the portal. A third-year junior from Jacksonville, Pyburn will have a year of eligibility remaining.

One of three quarterbacks to start a game for Mike Norvell this past season, Kromenhoek completed 52% of his passes (44 of 84) for 502 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in six appearances, brandishing dual-threat capability at times. He passed for 209 yards and three TDs in a 41-7 romp over Football Championship Subdivision lightweight Charleston Southern on Nov. 23, earning a start against Florida a week later.

He went 15 of 28 for 140 yards in that 31-11 loss and reeled off a couple of nifty runs, including a 15-yarder, but was sacked eight times.

Still, he seemed a solid candidate to at least begin the 2025 season as the starter, having fostered a relationship with Norvell that spanned several years. Norvell first offered Kromenhoek a scholarship in June 2021, months before the start of his sophomore year at Benedictine Military School in Savannah, Georgia.

With Kromenhoek’s departure, four-star freshman Trever Jackson, redshirt freshman Brock Glenn (seven career starts) and recent four-star signee Kevin Sperry remain FSU’s three quarterbacks currently on scholarship. Boston College transfer Thomas Castellanos, a Miami native who played one season for new ‘Noles offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn, is reportedly set to visit Tallahassee.

Pyburn, who became a starter this season and enjoyed a breakthrough fall, is believed to be the 10th Gators player — and most prominent to this point — to enter the transfer portal, which formally opened Monday morning.

He had four tackles and an interception in the Gators’ 34-20 loss to Georgia on Nov. 2 (his de facto homecoming game), and had eight tackles in a 27-16 upset of then-No. 21 LSU two weeks later.

“No decision is ever an easy one, but this was an especially hard one to make,” Pyburn said in a statement he released on social media. “I feel that I have lived out and completed my childhood goals at the University of Florida.”
