Flacco Signing Shouldn’t Change Browns NFL Draft Strategy
The Cleveland Brown signed Joe Flacco this week with the expectation that he will be the starting quarterback in another season where Deshaun Watson will most likely be lost. Flacco will begin his second stint with the Browns after signing late in the 2023 season and leading Cleveland on a 4-1 run and an unlikely postseason berth before losing to the upstart Texans in the Wild Card round. Last season, with what they thought would be a healthy Watson, Flacco was allowed to leave in free agency, where he landed in Indianapolis. But does the Flacco signing change the Browns’ plans for a quarterback in the upcoming NFL Draft? Max Chadwich of Pro Football Focus joined 92.3 The Fan’s The Overtime and explained what he thinks the plan is for the Browns.
“You’re probably going in with the expectation that either Joe Flacco or Kenny Pickett to come in and be the quarterback for as long as possible,” Chadwich said. “Then, when your rookie is ready, maybe you give the rookie a try. That’s probably the best-case scenario.” That has been the plan all along from what we hear, so that apparently has not changed. But what quarterback and with what pick still remains to be seen.
If Cleveland thinks Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders will slide out of the top 10, it may have been hoping to land him at No. 33 – the first pick of the second round. There’s also the chance they wanted to trade up into the middle of the first round after taking Colorado’s Travis Hunter at No. 2. But with the news that the New Orleans Saints might be in the market after a Derek Carr injury that could keep him out of the 2025 season, Sanders might be off the board with the No. 9 pick by New Orleans. So that leaves a host of other names for the Browns potentially in the second round or later.
