Star center Joel Embiid has consistently expressed his desire to remain with the Philadelphia 76ers for his entire career. Now, he is one step closer to realizing that goal after signing a new contract with the team.
On Friday, the 76ers confirmed that Embiid had agreed to a multi-year extension, though the specific terms were not disclosed.
Reportedly, Embiid’s extension is for three years and valued at $192.9 million, the maximum amount Philadelphia could offer. This deal keeps him under contract through the 2027-28 season, with a player option for 2028-29, guaranteeing him a total of $299.55 million.
“I started as a Sixer and want to finish my career here,” Embiid said in a statement. “When I was drafted as a 20-year-old kid from Cameroon, I had no idea how fortunate I was to land in Philadelphia. Through all the ups and downs, the city and fans have been everything, and I’m deeply grateful for their support … Philadelphia is home, and now it’s time to bring this community an NBA championship.”
Despite the 76ers taking a bit of a risk due to Embiid’s history of injuries, he remains one of the league’s top players when healthy. After winning MVP honors in the 2022-23 season, he was limited to just 39 games last season due to a knee injury but averaged 33.6 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 5.6 assists.
Embiid seems to have moved past his injury woes, as he recently participated in the 2024 Paris Olympics, helping Team USA win a gold medal.
