Red Sox manager Alex Cora was ejected in the first inning of the first game of a split doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins on Sunday at Fenway Park.
The incident occurred when the umpiring crew conferred and ruled that Byron Buxton could advance to third base due to interference during a pickoff attempt in Boston’s 8-1 win.
With Buxton at second base, pitcher Nick Pivetta threw to second baseman Vaughn Grissom, who fielded the ball while positioned in the baseline. Buxton returned to the base safely.
After the interference call, Cora quickly emerged from the dugout to argue the decision behind the mound. Crew chief Alan Porter ejected him after trying to prevent him from confronting the other umpires.
Cora later commented, “He did block the bag, but the process wasn’t right. They should have just made the call immediately.”
Before leaving the field to cheers from the crowd, Cora made two trips to second base to point out the spot where the interference occurred.
