Texas Rangers third baseman Josh Jung has missed the last three games and wasn’t in the lineup for Sunday’s final home game against the Seattle Mariners. The 2023 All-Star has been experiencing discomfort in his right wrist, which he had surgery on in April. Jung was sidelined for 102 games due to a fractured wrist and returned to action on July 29.
Rangers manager Bruce Bochy mentioned that Jung is undergoing an examination by his surgeon and could potentially be cleared to play in the final week of the season. The Rangers conclude their season with six road games, starting Tuesday against Oakland and Anaheim.
“I’d say it’s doubtful he’ll play this weekend,” Bochy said, noting that while Jung wants to be in the lineup, the team is exercising caution. “He even took swings today [Friday] and wanted to play. We’ll have him checked on the off day. It’s good for him to play if cleared, but we’re ensuring he’s not at risk during the road trip.”
Jung, 26, was the 8th overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft out of Texas Tech. In 46 games during the 2024 season, he’s batting .264 with five doubles, one triple, seven home runs, and 16 RBIs.
“I’d rather figure out what’s really going on and find a solution,” Jung told reporters on Friday, “so that next spring I don’t have this flare up and need cortisone shots to start the season.”
Jung also missed time in 2023 due to multiple injuries, including a fractured left thumb, and finished the season batting .266 with 25 doubles, 23 home runs, and 70 RBIs across 122 games.
Additionally, the Rangers have shut down pitcher Max Scherzer for the remainder of the season due to a left hamstring strain, which forced him onto the injured list before his scheduled Saturday start.
