In “The Game” against Ohio State, he returned a punt for a touchdown and caught a long pass that set up another score. Additionally, he made a critical interception in the red zone, preventing a Buckeyes touchdown.

It seems increasingly difficult for a pure defensive player to win the Heisman, as the award tends to favor quarterbacks and running backs. However, Wolverines cornerback Will Johnson is starting to gain attention.
In just four games, Johnson has returned two interceptions for touchdowns, showcasing a level of play reminiscent of Woodson. This week, On3.com ranked Johnson among the top 10 Heisman contenders, along with running back Kalel Mullings.
While it will be challenging for Johnson to make the 2025 Heisman finalists without contributing on offense, as coaches joked about him doing during the offseason, Johnson has proven to be a game-changer. Standing at 6-foot-3, it seems unlikely that he’ll take on an offensive role, but his defensive prowess continues to shine.
Johnson already holds the Michigan football record for interception returns for touchdowns, and it feels like he’s just getting started. Meanwhile, Kalel Mullings’ impressive showing on Saturday only solidified his place in the top 10 Heisman discussion.
