DEAL DONE: Packers WR key man Immediately Joins Rival After Release

On Tuesday, the NFL’s deadline for finalizing 53-man rosters led the Green Bay Packers to release several players, including wide receiver Samori Toure, who was selected 258th overall in the 2022 draft. Although Toure is a capable pass-catcher, the Packers’ wide receiver group is one of the most competitive on the team, leaving no room for the 26-year-old who is still trying to establish himself in the league. However, Toure didn’t have to wait long to discover his next opportunity, although it’s unfortunate that it’s with a division rival.

Packers News: Chicago Bears Signs WR Samori Toure

According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, Samori Toure was signed by the rival Chicago Bears on Wednesday. The plan is for the third-year wide receiver to initially join the practice squad, with hopes of earning more playing time as opportunities arise.

While some Packers fans wish Samori Toure well, it’s difficult to root for him now that he’s joined an NFC North rival. However, it will be interesting to see if a change of scenery with the Bears benefits Toure’s career. The Portland, OR native has struggled to elevate his game since being drafted two years ago, managing just 28 receptions for 160 yards and a touchdown over 22 games. His 34.0 passer rating when targeted last season further highlights his inconsistency as a pass-catcher.

If Toure is seeking revenge against his former team, he has until mid-November to earn playing time, as the Packers won’t face the Bears until Week 11 at Soldier Field. However, history isn’t on Toure’s sideā€”the Packers have dominated the Bears, holding a 19-2 record over their last 21 matchups, including 10 straight wins by an average margin of 12.7 points per game.

Cutting Toure is unlikely to impact the Packers’ championship aspirations. Matt LaFleur’s squad remains strong, currently tied for the ninth-best odds to win Super Bowl LIX (+1800) as the 2024 NFL season approaches, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
