DONE DEAL: Notre Dame confirm another 5-star defender commitment from rival portal

Despite the longstanding rivalry between Notre Dame and the USC Trojans, both football programs are facing similar challenges this week. Each team has players who have declared their intention to redshirt and transfer when the portal opens.

For Notre Dame, defensive back Jaden Mickey made the decision on Monday, though it’s said he’s considered it in the past. Mickey plans to transfer after graduating from the university.

In contrast, Bear Alexander’s departure from USC seems to be on less amicable terms. The defensive tackle, who has gained a reputation for frequently transferring, has reportedly clashed with head coach Lincoln Riley and his staff. Alexander announced his decision to leave on Wednesday, coinciding with similar announcements from players nationwide.

Notre Dame football rival defender leaves team in the lurch

Tony Jones, who Bear Alexander refers to as his father, confirmed to ESPN that Alexander will sit out the rest of the season to preserve a year of eligibility, although he will continue to practice.

“We were clear about our objectives,” Jones stated. “The goal is for him to be a full-time starter and leader on defense, just like we intended when we came here.”

Last season, Alexander made a strong impression in his first year with USC, recording 47 tackles from the defensive line, though he didn’t play in the game against Notre Dame.

However, this season has been a different story. He has managed only 5 tackles, with his playing time significantly reduced, partly due to reported conflicts with the USC coaching staff.

This development is notable for Notre Dame, as they will never have to face Alexander, who arrived in L.A. as one of the country’s top defensive linemen. This absence could have a major impact, especially with the season finale potentially determining which team qualifies for the College Football Playoffs.
