Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews and Edmonton Oilers forward Connor McDavid are among the best players in the NHL today, yet neither has lifted the Stanley Cup. Recently, the two superstars were seen training together on the ice in Munich, sparking fan speculation about a possible future collaboration, especially in Toronto. “New caption: ‘Connor McDavid training with future teammate Auston Matthews as they gear up for the 2027-28 NHL season with the Toronto Maple Leafs’ #LeafsForever”

It’s hard to imagine Matthews or McDavid being traded anytime soon to create such a dream duo. Matthews signed a four-year extension with Toronto last year and was recently named the team’s newest captain. Meanwhile, McDavid remains at the peak of his career, though he still lacks a Stanley Cup ring. Edmonton nearly won the Cup last season, pushing the Florida Panthers to seven games in the Stanley Cup Finals. With arguably the best player in the world on their roster, the Oilers have reason to believe their Cup victory is near. The three-time Hart Memorial Trophy winner, however, will become a free agent in the summer of 2026, when he’ll still be just 29 years old.
If Maple Leafs fans are hoping to see McDavid in a Toronto uniform, 2026 might be the most opportune time for that to happen. In the 2023-24 season, McDavid tallied 132 points (32 goals, 100 assists), while Matthews recorded 107 points (69 goals, 38 assists).
