The rivalry between the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs took a troubling turn after Cedric Paré’s social media accounts were deactivated by security. Although the rivalry may not be as intense as in the past, the matchups between these two teams remain among the fiercest in the NHL. Regardless of their standings, players are always focused on one thing: winning the latest chapter of this heated competition.

Tensions flared after a recent preseason game when Montreal’s Patrik Laine collided with Toronto’s Cedric Paré, resulting in a severe knee injury for Laine, sidelining him for two to three months. Despite Laine acknowledging it was an ‘unfortunate collision’ and not blaming Paré, some fans took things too far.

Darren Dreger revealed on TSN’s Insider Trading that the Toronto Maple Leafs’ security team had to step in due to death threats and abusive messages directed at Paré. “The Leafs’ security had to intervene and shut down Paré’s social media accounts because of the threats,” Dreger said. He emphasized that while rivalries can be intense, crossing the line into violence is unacceptable.
Even if the collision had been intentional, which it wasn’t, fans have no place in escalating matters with threats. Players, teams, and the NHL are fully capable of handling on-ice issues without involving dangerous behavior from the stands. There’s no room for this kind of conduct in hockey or any sport. The boundary between passion and unacceptable behavior should be clear.
