Houston Astros star second baseman José Altuve, a key figure in the clubhouse, understands the influence his words carry within the organization. He’s now using that sway to advocate for third baseman Alex Bregman, who is approaching free agency, to stay with the team beyond this season.
After the Astros’ AL Wild Card series loss to the Detroit Tigers, Altuve spoke to reporters, urging the franchise to re-sign Bregman. “I don’t want to imagine my last game with Breggy,” Altuve said. “I’m confident he’ll be our third baseman next year. We have to keep him—this organization won’t be the same without him. In my mind, there’s no way this was his last game.”
Bregman, who has spent his entire MLB career with the Astros since debuting in 2016, has become a cornerstone of the team, earning two All-Star selections and helping secure World Series titles in 2017 and 2022. He ranks sixth in franchise history with 191 home runs and ninth in RBIs with 663.
“From the moment he arrived, the organization took a positive turn,” Altuve continued. “He made this team much better. I hope there’s a strong chance he stays here, and not just for now, but to retire as an Astro.”
Bregman has previously expressed his desire to remain in Houston, but with his high value in the upcoming free agency, the Astros will need to present a substantial offer to make that happen.
