Few people know Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer as well as Kurtiss Riggs. Riggs played quarterback for DeBoer at Sioux Falls, where they were also roommates, and later coached quarterbacks when DeBoer took over as head coach. Their close friendship has continued, with Riggs even attending Alabama games this season.
Riggs describes DeBoer as the athlete who always wanted to be in clutch situations—the one to take the final basketball shot, bat with the game on the line, or catch the winning touchdown. Although DeBoer didn’t vocalize it, his body language made it clear he believed he’d make the play.
As Alabama’s head coach, DeBoer is just as calm and composed as he was as an athlete. “He’s even-keeled,” said Alabama general manager Courtney Morgan, noting that DeBoer maintains the same demeanor, whether in victory or defeat, such as after a win over Georgia or a loss to Vanderbilt.
This poise has become a talking point, especially following Alabama’s recent loss to Vanderbilt—its first in 40 years. DeBoer didn’t lose his temper or raise his voice in the postgame press conference, and his calm approach led to discussions, particularly on the Finebaum Show. One caller expressed frustration with DeBoer’s composure, but DeBoer emphasized that frustration doesn’t mean losing control.
Riggs recalls that even as a player, DeBoer’s frustration was only visible to those who knew him well. Despite setbacks, DeBoer remained hard on himself, holding high expectations. Alabama receivers coach JaMarcus Shephard echoed this, noting that DeBoer’s quiet nature doesn’t mean he lacks intensity—he holds his players accountable but does so calmly.
DeBoer’s competitive spirit has been evident since his days as a player at Sioux Falls. Whether diving for catches or studying film relentlessly, his drive to win has never wavered. Riggs notes that DeBoer’s passion for competition carried over into his coaching, where his calm demeanor belies a fierce desire to succeed.
