Former New York Ranger Sean Avery has publicly criticized Mika Zibanejad’s early performance in the 2024-25 season, accusing him of laziness.
Despite Zibanejad’s impressive track record as one of the NHL’s top players over the past six seasons, Avery isn’t satisfied with the forward’s recent effort. Zibanejad did score a goal and add two assists in a recent game against the Detroit Red Wings, but these were his first points after going scoreless in the team’s opening two games.

During the game, Avery took to social media to criticize Zibanejad, calling him out for avoiding the “dirty work” and accusing him of being distracted by his DJing hobby over the summer. He sarcastically remarked, “DJing in Ibiza all summer, Mika. The season’s started—bear down!”
While Zibanejad’s strong performance against the Red Wings may have silenced some critics, Avery’s harsh comments gained attention, especially given his own notable four-point night against the Boston Bruins during his playing days, despite not being known for his offensive skills.
