Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels is considered “week-to-week” with a rib injury, according to coach Dan Quinn, who informed reporters on Monday. The team plans to closely monitor Daniels throughout the week before deciding if he’ll play in Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears.
Quinn avoided providing specific details about the injury, not confirming whether Daniels has a broken or bruised rib, but he emphasized that it is not expected to be a long-term issue.
“We’ll guide him through the necessary steps in practice and evaluate his progress,” Quinn said. “We’re optimistic he can play, but we’ll be cautious and make sure we prioritize his well-being.”
Daniels sustained the injury during the opening play of Sunday’s 40-7 victory over the Carolina Panthers. He ran for 46 yards on an option play before being tackled by Carolina defenders.
Despite finishing the drive with additional rushing and passing yards, Daniels was evaluated by the medical staff after walking off the field slowly. He was eventually sidelined for the remainder of the game.
While Daniels is known for his lean physique, Quinn clarified that the injury resulted from an awkward tackle, not his aggressive running style. “He was trying to score, and as he was going downfield, he just landed awkwardly,” Quinn explained, adding that the team won’t shy away from quarterback runs.
Quinn also mentioned that Daniels, who likely could have returned to the game, is not planning to wear extra padding or a flak jacket when he gets back on the field.
With Daniels unavailable, backup Marcus Mariota took over and excelled, throwing for 205 yards and two touchdowns in the commanding win. Mariota, known for his mobility, evaded defenders and kept the offense rolling, scoring on six of seven drives.
“We hate to see injuries, but when they happen, you want to be ready. Marcus stepped up in a big way,” Quinn said.
The victory improved Washington’s record to 5-2, securing their lead in the NFC East.
Daniels remained upbeat on the sidelines and was full of energy when he arrived at practice on Monday, Quinn noted, adding that the rookie will likely push to play on Sunday.
Daniels has made a strong case for Offensive Rookie of the Year, leading the league in completion percentage with 1,410 passing yards, 372 rushing yards, and 10 total touchdowns through seven games.
Quinn acknowledged that Daniels’ unique playing style is a key consideration, saying, “We want him to be fully himself when he returns.”
If Daniels is cleared to play, he will face off against top draft pick Caleb Williams of the Chicago Bears in a highly anticipated matchup of 5-2 teams, set for Sunday at 4:25 p.m. at Northwest Stadium.
