With Bryan Price stepping down, the San Francisco Giants officially promoted assistant pitching coach J.P. Martinez to pitching coach on manager Bob Melvin’s staff on Friday.
Martinez, 42, brings continuity to the Giants’ pitching staff, having been with the team since 2021. He remains one of the few holdovers from Gabe Kapler’s tenure.
Martinez previously worked with pitching director Brian Bannister and coach Andrew Bailey until their departures following the 2023 season.
One of his main tasks in 2025 will be managing a group of young pitchers, including left-hander Kyle Harrison, who had a strong rookie season before injuries sidelined him.
Hayden Birdsong, Tristan Beck, and Landen Roupp are also expected to compete for rotation spots and increased workloads. While it’s unlikely free agent Blake Snell will return, the team anticipates a full season from 2021 AL Cy Young winner Robbie Ray.
Martinez is also familiar with Jordan Hicks, who struggled last year while transitioning from reliever to starter, but hopes to be more consistent in 2025.
