Or at least, that was their goal until the NFL issued a hefty reminder to linebacker Neville Hewitt about last week’s game. Hewitt was fined for a “late hit” labeled as “Unnecessary Roughness” by the league.

This ruling aligned with the officiating crew’s in-game assessment, which led to a penalty on the play.

To be fair, Hewitt’s tackle technique—lifting and slamming the ball carrier—likely would’ve led to a fine regardless of the “late hit” call. The NFL handed out 23 fines in Week 7, 15 of which were due to “Unnecessary Roughness,” with Hewitt’s $11,255 fine tied as the fifth-highest.

Last week, Hewitt stepped up in place of Henry To’oTo’o, who missed the game due to a concussion. He led the team with nine total tackles and added an interception to his performance.
