DEAL DONE: Broncos Confirm new Signing of $15 Million as Replacement for Quarterback who De-commits from team

The Denver Broncos are currently 5-3, two games above .500, with the trade deadline approaching in just over a week. Rather than making a major trade that could disrupt team chemistry, a minor move in free agency might be a more practical option.

They could still improve one of their starting positions, even at this point in the season. According to Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine, signing former Pittsburgh Steelers starting center Mason Cole could be a smart addition for the Broncos.

Ballentine noted, “The Broncos entered the season with uncertainty at center. After Lloyd Cushenberry left in free agency, Denver didn’t do much to fill the void. Luke Wattenberg struggled before landing on injured reserve with an ankle injury, and Alex Forsyth has stepped in and been serviceable. However, the Broncos might explore the free-agent market for an upgrade.”

While Cole may not be the top choice, Ballentine pointed out that he started every game at center for the Steelers in 2022 and 2023. Bringing him in to assess his condition and potential as an upgrade could be worthwhile.

Mason Cole, who was a third-round pick by the Arizona Cardinals in 2018, has remained a free agent since being released by the Steelers in February. He started 34 regular season games for Pittsburgh in the last two seasons and has 73 starts over his 94-game career.

The Broncos currently have $5 million in cap space, per Spotrac, and could create more by restructuring contracts if needed. With upcoming games against the Chiefs, Ravens, and Falcons, Denver could evaluate its roster further before the trade deadline, potentially making Cole a viable late addition to bolster the team.
