HAPPENINGS: “Audacious Yankees Trade Proposal Secures Mason Miller in Exchange for Two Top-Five Prospects”

MLB free agency has had a slow start, but momentum could build once Juan Soto chooses his next team. Speculation has centered around the New York Yankees’ plans if Soto doesn’t return to the Bronx. However, what happens if he stays? Keeping Soto would pair him with Aaron Judge in the lineup, but the Yankees still face significant issues in the infield and pitching staff that GM Brian Cashman must address.

Relief pitcher Luke Weaver proved to be a reliable late-game option for New York, posting a 7-3 record with a 2.89 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, and 103 strikeouts over 84 innings. However, he could use additional support, especially with two-time All-Star Clay Holmes hitting free agency and unlikely to re-sign. Cashman has options, as several intriguing relievers are available through free agency or trades. One under-the-radar name is Mason Miller. While the Athletics reportedly don’t plan to trade him this offseason, their stance could shift depending on circumstances.

Zach Pressnell of FanSided proposed a blockbuster three-player trade that would bring Mason Miller to the Bronx:

  • Yankees receive: Right-handed pitcher Mason Miller
  • Athletics receive: Outfielder Jasson Dominguez and right-handed pitcher Will Warren
  • Zach Pressnell noted that this hypothetical trade hinges on Juan Soto remaining in the Bronx for the next decade or more. If Soto signs elsewhere, the Yankees might find it harder to justify parting with Dominguez. The cost is undeniably steep—MLB.com ranks Dominguez as the Yankees’ top prospect, with Warren finishing the season as their fifth-ranked prospect.

However, acquiring Mason Miller would provide the Yankees with a reliable long-term option to bolster the back end of their rotation. Miller isn’t eligible for free agency until 2030 and is projected to earn just $800,000 next season, as he has not yet reached arbitration eligibility.
