Kane Wommack considers Justin Jefferson one of Alabama’s three starting inside linebackers, but the Crimson Tide will be without him for the first half of Saturday’s game against Wisconsin.
Jefferson, a former junior college transfer, was penalized for targeting in Alabama’s 42-16 win over South Florida last week at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Alabama fans disagreed with the call, believing Jefferson hit Bulls quarterback Byrum Brown with his shoulder rather than the crown of his helmet. However, the officiating crew ruled it as targeting, and by NCAA rules, Jefferson will sit out the first half against the Badgers.
Kalen DeBoer confirmed Jefferson’s first-half suspension during Wednesday’s SEC Coaches Teleconference.
“I think every situation is unique,” DeBoer said.
“It’s unfortunate for many players because they’re really trying their best. They’re not intentionally trying to hurt someone. Justin felt that way too. But there are criteria for targeting, and in this case, he met them. It’s part of the game, and as a proponent of football, we have to prioritize safety. With everything that’s happened over the years, we have rules in place. These rules are continually reviewed, and while adjustments are possible, we have to find the right balance to cover various situations, as they don’t all fit neatly into one category.”
With Jefferson out, Jeremiah Alexander or Justin Okoronkwo may get significant playing time in his place.
