On Wednesday night, A’ja Wilson and the reigning champion Las Vegas Aces faced off against one of the WNBA’s hottest teams, led by Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever. This was the first of a two-game series, with the rematch scheduled for Friday, September 13. With just 26 seconds remaining in the second quarter, Wilson sank a mid-range jumper to reach her 12th point of the game and her 941st of the season. In doing so, she surpassed Seattle Storm’s Jewell Loyd to become the WNBA’s single-season scoring leader. Loyd had set the previous record of 939 points in a season last year. Remarkably, Wilson broke the record in 35 games, whereas it took Loyd 38 games to reach the same milestone.

Wilson, a two-time WNBA MVP, has consistently been the leading candidate for another MVP title this season. She is putting up impressive numbers, averaging a league-best 27.3 points and 2.7 blocks per game. Wilson also ranks second in rebounds, grabbing 11.9 boards per contest, just behind Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese. A former standout at South Carolina, she was the No. 1 pick in the 2018 draft. Wilson has led the Aces to consecutive championships and now has her sights set on a third straight title this postseason.
After a challenging 1-4 stretch following the Olympic break, the Aces have bounced back, going 5-2 in their last seven games. With a 22-13 record, they hold the fourth seed in the playoffs ahead of their matchup against the Indiana Fever.
